Native Plants

Discover the incredible world of Oklahoma's native plants and the important role they play in our environment! In this hands-on nature immersion class, students will explore the diverse trees, flowers, grasses, and edible plants that naturally thrive in Oklahoma's ecosystems. Through observation, discussion, and interactive activities, students will learn why native plants are uniquely adapted to our climate, how they support pollinators and wildlife, and why they are essential to healthy ecosystems.
Students will have the opportunity to see, touch, smell, and in some cases sample native plants such as Jerusalem artichokes, native passionvine, pawpaw, native strawberries, and more. They will learn about host plants for butterflies and pollinators, including the important relationship between native plants and monarch butterflies. Students may also receive native seeds to plant at home while learning when and how to establish native gardens.
The class will explore larger environmental topics such as ecosystem restoration, flood prevention, biodiversity, and the impact native plants have on soil and water health. Students will also learn about the Dust Bowl and how the destruction of native prairie ecosystems contributed to one of the greatest environmental disasters in American history. Through these lessons, students will discover practical ways they can make a positive impact in their own yards, neighborhoods, and communities by helping restore and protect Oklahoma's native ecosystems.
